Chess Competition

A Suc-chess-ful Day!

On Thursday 4 June, Somerville Intermediate School had the honour of hosting the East Auckland Intermediate  Interschool Chess Competition in conjunction with the Howick Pakuranga Chess Club and the New Zealand Chess Federation. With five schools and  sixteen  teams from across East Auckland taking part, the atmosphere was competitive and intense.

Somerville entered seven teams in the event, with some students experiencing their first taste of inter-school chess competition at this level. Players competed in teams of four, with each contestant playing multiple games throughout the day.

At the start of each round, the pin-drop silence throughout the hall was a clear indicator of the deep concentration required. The day provided an opportunity for players to challenge themselves, support their teammates, and demonstrate resilience, sportsmanship, and respect.

The Somerville A Team performed exceptionally well throughout the day, and this young team can be very proud of its overall second-place finish. A special congratulations goes to standout players from Team A, namely: Olivia Li  who had a successful day as winner on Board 1 and Jaden Lee, who was  joint winner on Board 2.

Team A Members

  • Olivia L. : Winner of Board 1 with a score of 5.5/6

  • Jaden L.: Shared Winner of Board 2 with a score of 5.5/6
