Acceleration Support Teacher

Somerville Intermediate School is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and collaborative teacher to join our Aspiring Team, a dynamic group of professionals working to accelerate learning and strengthen outcomes for all ākonga. This new, full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to shape and design innovative approaches to acceleration across literacy and mathematics.
The Acceleration Support Teacher will work with students working on the cusp of expectations, leading multiple short-term, targeted intervention groups across the school. Each group will meet three to four times per week, with a focus on building confidence, bridging gaps, and unlocking potential in literacy and mathematics. The role will involve close collaboration with classroom teachers, our two learning support coordinators, and Aspiring Team colleagues in Extension and ESOL, creating cohesive and responsive pathways for learning.
We are looking for a teacher who:
Brings deep pedagogical understanding in literacy (including structured literacy) and mathematics, and a passion for accelerating progress through effective, evidence-based practice
Demonstrates strong data literacy, using achievement information to identify trends, monitor progress, and respond to student needs in timely, targeted ways
Values collaboration and innovation, with the ability to design flexible approaches that maximise learning opportunities (including creative “double-dipping” models)
Is reflective and committed to ongoing professional learning, including opportunities to engage in PLD and contribute their expertise back to staff
Demonstrates a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equitable outcomes for all learners
May bring experience in ALL, ALiM, or Learning Support, or a proven record of working effectively with diverse learners

Teacher Aide/Learning Assistant
Permanent, Part Time (20 hours per week)
Somerville Intermediate is looking for a committed and compassionate Teacher Aide / Learning Assistant to work alongside students with additional needs, to support them with their learning. This position requires someone who has a high degree of empathy, enjoys working with children and can work on building student confidence within group and classroom environments.
The position is permanent, 20 hours per week and will commence on 2 February 2026.
The successful applicant will:
● Show patience and empathy
● Be flexible, adaptable
● Demonstrate both initiative and the ability to take direction
● Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create meaningful relationships
● Enjoy working in a busy, team environment
● Able to work 1-on-1 or in small groups helping with reading, writing and maths
● Be an excellent communicator in English (both written and verbal)
● Be a NZ resident, or have a current work visa and is eligible to work in NZ
Pay rates in accordance with the Support Staff in Schools’ Collective Agreement.
