Auckland Champs Football

Year 7 Girls

Our Somerville Year 7 Girls’ Football Team recently represented the school at the Auckland Championships after winning the SEZ Tournament.

The tournament was held at the Seddon Football Fields in Western Springs, where the girls played two pool matches before competing in the semi-finals and finals.

Somerville opened the tournament with a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Pukekohe, followed by another strong defensive performance in a 0–0 draw against Te Atatū in their second pool match. These results saw the team finish second in their pool and advance to the semi-finals against a very strong Remuera Intermediate side.

Despite a determined effort, the girls were narrowly defeated in the semi-final, placing them into the 3rd/4th playoff against Belmont Intermediate. In another tightly contested match, the game remained scoreless until an unfortunate break allowed Belmont to score late, resulting in a narrow 1–0 loss and an overall 4th place finish.

The girls should be incredibly proud of their efforts. Their teamwork, positive support for one another, and excellent sportsmanship were outstanding throughout the tournament. The team represented Somerville with pride, determination, and resilience against some of Auckland’s strongest competition.

Year 7 Boys

The Year 7 boys’ football team competed in the Auckland Championships held at Western Springs, showing determination and teamwork throughout the tournament.

In their first game against Te Atatū Intermediate, the team displayed a strong defensive effort, resulting in a hard-fought 0–0 draw. The second match saw them face a highly skilled Northcross Intermediate side, where despite their efforts, they were defeated 4–0.

The team then played off for 5th or 6th place in a closely contested match that went to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure the win.

Overall, the team represented the school with pride, resilience, and sportsmanship. A big thank you to all the supporters who came along to encourage and cheer the team on.
