The New Zealand Curriculum

Report Elements

Spotlight

You have ongoing access to your child’s learning throughout the year. In addition to the school report, regular examples of your child’s learning, feedback, reflections and assessments, that include standardised tests, provide you with an understanding of your child’s progress and achievement on a continuous basis.

Parent/Whānau Interviews

We strongly encourage you to attend the parent/whānau interviews early in Term 3. These conversations with your child’s teacher are a valuable opportunity to build a comprehensive understanding of your child’s achievement and progress, both academically and in their personal development.

Statement from the Ministry of Education - February 2026

Reporting to Parents and Whānau

We have introduced a new curriculum this year for Maths & Statistics and English for Years 0–10, and Te Reo Rangatira and Pāngarau Tau 0-10 wāhanga ako.

This means we are currently changing from the old to the new curriculum. We want to acknowledge that schools and kura will only have been using the new curriculum from the start of 2026, which includes new teaching and assessment methods and content.

Because of this, you could see a change in your child’s progress or achievement compared to previous years, which may be the result of changes in the curriculum expectations for your child’s year level.

If you have concerns or questions about your child’s achievement, we strongly suggest talking with your child’s teacher or kaiako. They will also have used their own observations, classroom tasks and other tests when reporting on the progress your child or tamaiti is making.

Please consider the context for assessment and reporting this year in light of the above statement and as you seek to understand your child’s learning.

Written Report 2026

Our school reports have been updated to reflect the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum and reporting requirements. The format and language used align with the Ministry of Education’s Parent Portal (linked below) aimed at ensuring clear and consistent information about your child’s achievement in relation to year level expectations.

The progress descriptors used in the report show your child’s current level of achievement within their year level. The table below provides further explanation of these terms to help you understand what they mean.
