Girls

On Wednesday 16 September, the Somerville Girls’ Basketball Team headed to Bruce Pulman Park for the SEZ Basketball Tournament, ready for a day filled with exciting and competitive games. Knowing we would be facing some strong teams, the girls arrived at school on Wednesday morning with a positive mindset and were ready to give it their all.

Our first game was against Elim, who played strongly and made us work hard for an 11-5 win. The girls showed great teamwork, communication and spirit throughout the game. Our next game was against Pakuranga Heights, where the team put together another strong performance and came away with an awesome 16-4 win.

After a well-earned break, we knew our next games would be tough. We faced Mission Heights and started strongly, leading 4-0 in the first half. However, Mission Heights fought their way back into the game and eventually took an 8-4 win.

Our fourth game was the semi-final against Sancta Maria. They were a tough opponent throughout both halves, but our girls continued to play with determination and gave it everything they had. Unfortunately, we weren't able to come away with the win, which meant we would play for third place.

For our final game of the day, we faced a familiar opponent - Mission Heights. Having already played them earlier in the tournament, we knew it would be a challenging and tiring game. However, after such a close result in our previous match, the girls knew they were capable of turning things around through perseverance, teamwork and determination.

The girls stepped onto the court with confidence and were ready for the rematch. We led 4-2 at halftime, and in the second half, the team continued to support one another and play some fantastic basketball. Their hard work paid off, with Somerville finishing the game with an impressive 16-8 victory and securing third place!

Despite facing some tough competition throughout the day, the girls demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship towards the other schools and continued to encourage and celebrate one another. They should be incredibly proud of finishing third and of the effort they showed throughout the tournament.

A big thank you to Mr Gee for coaching and supporting the team, and to Thea's dad for also giving his time to coach the girls, teach them new basketball skills, build their confidence on the court, and help them develop as a team.

Congratulations to all the girls on a fantastic tournament and a well-deserved third-place finish!

Boys

On 16 September, the Somerville Boys’ Basketball team set off to the SEZ basketball tournament. It was a full on day and the team carried themselves with pride and sportsmanship.

They started the day strong, getting a win during the first game. Out of the 8 games played, they managed to win 5 of them. This resulted in them placing 6th overall.

The team should be very proud of their achievements and it was a really fun day. Good job boys!
