Eastern Zone Schools' Sprint Series
This term, 15 Somerville students took part in the Eastern Zone Schools Orienteering Sprint Series. Orienteering is a sport that combines running with navigation, where participants use a map to find a series of checkpoints in the fastest time possible.These events were held every Tuesday afternoon at various schools around East Auckland, rain or shine. Somerville students competed exceedingly well, with several standout performances.

Championship Eastern Zone Schools' Sprint Series
On Sunday 6 April, Ethan I and Olivia H competed in the Auckland-region Schools Orienteering Sprint Championship for 2025. To qualify for this championship, Ethan and Olivia had to place among the top 10 orienteers from South Auckland, based on results from weekly orienteering events held throughout the term. They each competed in courses at Macleans and St Kentigern. Olivia placed 3rd overall for Year 7 girls in Auckland, and Ethan placed 10th overall for Year 7 boys. It was a big event, with a strong turnout from across the Auckland region and beautiful weather.
SEZ Orienteering
On Tuesday 8 April, 11 orienteering students took part in the South Eastern Zone Orienteering competition at Lloyd Elsmore. Students competed in orienteering teams of 4 or 6, with each team member running a different course. The top four fastest times from each team were combined, and the team with the lowest total time determined the final placing.
