Whakamana and Kapa Haka Noho
On Monday and Tuesday this week, the Somerville Intermediate Gym was transformed into a hub of scientific wonder, as we welcomed the Science Roadshow back to our kura.
We're thrilled to share some exciting news from our recent cultural noho (overnight stay) at Maketū Marae in Kāwhia! Our Whakamana and Kapa Haka students had an incredibly successful and enriching experience, immersing themselves in a vibrant array of activities.
Our students embraced every moment. They enthusiastically participated in preparing kai for a traditional hāngi dinner, learned the art of mau rākau (Māori weaponry), titi-torea (stick games), and poi, and discovered the intricate craft of raranga (weaving). They also had the privilege of listening to the fascinating history of the marae and learned a new waiata (song) that was specially written and gifted to Somerville Intermediate – what an honour!
The feedback from our students has been overwhelmingly positive. They absolutely loved the experience, feeling a profound connection to Māori culture and forging wonderful new friendships. In fact, many students have already expressed their eagerness to secure a spot for a potential noho next year – a true testament to the impact of this journey!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Whaea Carolyn and her whānau, our amazing parent helpers, Matua Hemi, Matua Adam, and Whaea Debbie for making this such an unforgettable and deeply enriching cultural experience for our students. Their dedication and support made this truly special.
