Science Roadshow
On Monday and Tuesday this week, the Somerville Intermediate Gym was transformed into a hub of scientific wonder, as we welcomed the Science Roadshow back to our kura.
The excitement was electric as ākonga engaged with more than 60 hands-on exhibits, exploring fascinating scientific concepts in a fun, interactive, and memorable way. Each class had the opportunity to investigate six themed exhibit zones showcasing science in action, including:
Applied Science — Te Pūtaiao Whaipainga
Detecting — Te Tautohu
Forces — Ngā Tōpana
Patterns — He Tauira
Structures – He Hanganga
Trees and the Environment — Ngā Rākau me te Taiao
Ākonga were immersed in a wide range of learning experiences that invited them to wonder, investigate, and make meaningful connections. In addition to the interactive exhibits, students enjoyed two live science shows that brought key scientific ideas to life in exciting and engaging ways:
Planet Earth — Whakaaturanga Papatūānuku
This show explored the big ideas of matter cycles, energy flows, and life webs, helping students better understand the interconnectedness of our natural world.
Balloons and Bernoulli — Ngā Puangi me Bernoulli
Featuring floating balls, flying paper, and jaw-dropping demonstrations, this show revealed the magic of air pressure and Bernoulli’s Principle in action.
A special shout-out to our amazing team of student explainers who volunteered their time and energy to support the exhibits and guide their peers. Your leadership and enthusiasm were key to making the event such a success.
We’re incredibly fortunate to host this travelling science extravaganza and provide our ākonga with the opportunity to experience science beyond the classroom. Events like this ignite curiosity, deepen understanding, and remind us all just how exciting science can be. He mihi nunui ki te rōpū Science Roadshow! – Thank you for inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, inventors, and explorers!
