Interschool National Chess Championship

The Somerville ‘A’ chess team competed in the National Finals: Interschool Chess Team Championship on 26–27 September 2026, at Freemans Bay Community Centre.

With 82 teams representing primary, intermediate and secondary schools from across the country, the tournament provided a fantastic opportunity for our players to challenge themselves, learn from others and enjoy some highly competitive chess. On the second day, players competed individually. Over the two days, the team had plenty of fun, strengthened their friendships and made the most of this exciting experience.
In the team event, Somerville  finished 14th out of 27 teams in a highly competitive division, achieving an impressive overall result of three wins, one draw and three losses.

Individual Results:

Board 1: Olivia L – 4.5/7
Board 2: Jaden L – 6.5/7
Board 3: Alex L – 2/7
Board 4: Zorawar S – 2/7

A special congratulations to Olivia L, who received one of the Best Girl Player awards, and Jaden L, who placed 1st on Board 2.

Olivia achieved further success in the Individual National Chess Championship, finishing joint second overall with 4/5 points and earning the Best Girl Player award once again. What an outstanding achievement!

A special thank you to our team manager, Mrs Annie Yeoh, who reported that the players gave it their very best and, most importantly, represented Somerville School’s motto, “The Best You Can Be,” exceptionally well.

Well done to all our players! They should be incredibly proud of their achievements, sportsmanship and the way they represented Somerville School on the national stage.

A huge thank you to Mrs Annie Yeoh for her enthusiasm and dedication to the team.
