Auckland Attractions

Whether you are interested in learning about history and Maori Culture, visiting one of the many beautiful parks and beaches, cruising on our stunning harbour, enjoying the many scenic walks available, relaxing in the natural thermal hot pools, or jumping off the Sky Tower, Auckland has something for everyone.




Auckland is surrounded by some amazing beaches and there are lots of beautiful places to relax with friends. Cockle Bay and Howick are the closest beaches to Somerville Intermediate, with Eastern Beach and Bucklands Beach a short drive away. Cockle Bay in particular is great for families, with a playground at one end and a large grassed area at the other, perfect for picnics. All east coast beaches near the school have white sand and small waves, making them perfect for swimming, kayaking and other water activities.



Howick Historical Village

The Howick Historical Village is situated in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, a 10 minute drive from Somerville Intermediate. The Village is a living history museum and it's aim is to depict life in 19th Century New Zealand. The Village is open every day from 10am, excluding some public holidays - last admission is 4pm daily. There is free car parking, picnic areas available and a cafe'.




Students enjoy shopping at Botany Town Centre which is located a short distance from Somerville Intermediate. Syliva Park is also a popular destination for shopping and is located about 15 minutes drive from the school. Both of these centres have a selection of international and local shops, a cinema complex, cafes and restaurants.



The Sky Towerskytower 1

Auckland's Sky Tower is 328 metres tall and has amazing views of Auckland.  If you are brave, you can walk on the glass floor and look down to the tiny cars and people below you. If you are really brave, you can do the sky jump!  It is also worth experiencing the Orbit restaurant at the top of the tower, Auckland's only 360-degree revolving restaurant.



Kelly Tarlton'sKellyTarltons

Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium, is a great place to see over 80 different species, including sharks, stingrays, penguins and sea horses. You can also see what life was like for some of the first explorers in Antarctica!



Rainbow's End

Visit Rainbow's End for a fun day out with family and friends. It is New Zealand's only theme park, situated in Manukau City, and has some fantastic rides, including a roller coaster, log flume, bumper boats and much more!



Auckland ZooAucklandZoo

A great day out for the whole family! See the kiwis, lions, giraffes, monkeys and other incredible animals at the Auckland Zoo. There is a lovely park close to the Zoo called Western Springs, where you can have a picnic and feed the ducks!



Auckland Museum

The Auckland War Memorial Museum has excellent exhibitions and interactive displays. You can see a Maori show with traditional singing and dancing, and learn more about New Zealand history.



MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology)

MOTAT offers a collection of interactive historical exhibitions around transport and technology, including horse and carriage and 'Little Flick' fire engine rides every weekend.




Waiwera Hot Pools

Waiwera Thermal Resort is approximately  one hour from Somerville Intermediate. Relax in the natural thermal waters, play on the waterslides or watch a movie in the Movie Pool.



Skiing and SnowboardingSnowplanet

You don't need a mountain to have fun skiing or snowboarding! Visit Snowplanet - Auckland's indoor snow park in Silverdale, approximately 45 minutes north of Somerville Intermediate.

Hire a bike and cycle through the forest on over 100km of purpose-built track.
