Year 7's - learn how scientists operate, how to work with a budget of chemicals and equipment, that it is okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them, and to use existing knowledge in a new situation. One of their most favourite activities is to design their own method of making a traffic light drink and then of course get to taste it. They also learn what happens when different chemicals are mixed together, about gravity and flight. |
| Year 8's learn about the skills that they need to develop to become a scientist - critical thinking, analysing results, research skills, graphing and tabling. They build on some of the importants concepts learnt in Year 7. One of their favourite activities is to design their own method to freeze ice-cream quicker than in a freezer using existing knowledge in a new situation. They are also going to monitor the speed of cars around Somerville and report their findings to the Police. |
Science is all about asking questions about the world around you and then trying to find the answers – either by researching, doing experiments, designing or inventing something new, asking experts or undergoing discussions with other students in the Science Lab.
This is what Specialist Science at Somerville is all about – trying to think like real scientists! We learn how to: measure, compare, analyse, predict, use data collection equipment, model, explore, share ideas, keep safe in the lab, be creative, build on ideas we already know, listen to each other, respect each others ideas, be independent, support and help each other, take risks, learn from mistakes, inspire others and be inspired by others.
We learn about: atoms and molecules,density, physical and chemical reactions, mixing things, separating things, acids and carbonates, energy, forces, air pressure , flight, heat and temperature, acids and bases, solubility and forensics. We also learn about science careers. Above all we learn that SCIENCE IS FUN!!!
