School Rules

Golden Rule:
Treat others as you want them to treat you.

  1. Students should be quiet and orderly when moving
around or in the buildings in consideration of others.
  2. Treat other people with kindness.
  3. Keep in the right places. This means stay within the
school boundaries. Students are only allowed to
leave the grounds in school hours under exceptional
circumstances and only with the permission of a
teacher. They must sign out at the office.
  4. Know what to bring to school. This means chewing
gum, lollies, valuable games, radios, jewellery, toys and glass bottles should not be brought to school. Make-up, including coloured nail
polish, is not to be worn. Dangerous goods are expressly forbidden.
  5. Treat all property carefully.
  6. Cyclists must know the road code and wear a helmet.
  7. Know what to do if it is wet during intervals.
Behaviour Management

We focus on desirable behaviour and attitudes through:

  • Having clear expectations
  • Rewarding and recognising appropriate behaviour and academic standards and
  • Praising effort.

STAR (Somerville Totally Awesome Reward) Awards and merit
certificates of various kinds are awarded for high standards of
achievement, behaviour and consistent effort.
Rules are kept to a minimum but we do have firm expectations about manners, courtesy and appropriate behaviour.
These will be rigorously enforced.

Discipline and Guidance

The school encourages and assists each student to develop positive
work patterns and habits, particularly self-discipline, independence,
responsibility, perseverance and honesty.

Students are also encouraged to develop positive self-esteem,
demonstrate respect and caring for him/herself and others. The school
fosters respect for authority and care for the environment.

Discipline is the responsibility of each staff member. The deputy and
associate principals have particular responsibility for the pastoral care of
students, but the ultimate decision for discipline rests with the principal
and board of trustees.

The school has an established discipline and guidance policy, which
includes a standard course of action for students whose behaviour causesconcern.

This policy is available here.
