Information Literacy

Information Literacy is the ability to find, use and evaluate information. Today, the challenge for our students is not how to locate information, as there is a wealth of information available at their fingertips.  The challenge, for our 21st century learners, lies in wading through the dense smog of available information, finding out what is relevant to their needs, understanding the best way to use this information and then evaluating the implications of this found information.

Somerville's Information Literacy program has been designed to help our students achieve this.
Year 7 students will learn about: fiction and non-fiction books, how to locate resources, how to find and use keywords, how to critically reflect on their own learning, learn new tools for organising knowledge, strategies on how to plan their research path, locate the best sources of information, and how to identify their natural intelligences (Gardner's Multiple Intelligences) and then use them in a research task.
Year 8 students will revise the features of a library, and then while publishing their own non-fiction book they will learn: how to create research questions, write a bibliography, take notes, how to critically reflect on their learning and evaluate various sources of information, and how to best present information.
